Sara Zimmers, DVM Practice Owner
I am a Michigan native and a 1999 graduate of Michigan State University’s veterinary school. During veterinary school, I worked in the necropsy (autopsy) lab and as a surgical technician in the horse wards. Having a special interest in birds and other exotic animals, I participated in dolphin and avian research projects, and won a scholarship to work with parrots in Western Australia.
After veterinary school, I became an associate in a small animal practice in Michigan whose clientele consisted of 50% exotic animals. There, I gained invaluable clinical experience with everything from ferrets to caimans. After 2 years, I moved down to Wellington, Florida-home of the Winter Equestrian Festival. I joined a large referral practice in West Palm Beach. I really enjoyed the challenge of emergency/critical care medicine, advanced soft tissue surgery, and working with other specialists. In 2004, I began to search for a veterinary practice to purchase. After enduring two horrendous hurricanes, my husband and I decided to move to beautiful Virginia and live in the country. In 2005, we moved to northern Virginia and I joined a large 24-hour referral practice in Woodbridge, VA. During this time, one of my horses became very ill and I began a new journey in my professional career. While still working, I attended school to learn to trim and rehabilitate lameness problems in horses. In 2007, I became a certified Equine Hoofcare Professional. While I am currently not accepting equine patients, I hope to open a rehabilitation center in the future.
In December 2007, I purchased Henry County Animal Hospital. Since that time, I have been busy!! In addition to seeing patients, I have remodeled the practice’s landscaping, waiting, and reception areas, purchased new equipment, and started this website! I have also implemented new philosophies and procedures, which I hope will allow the hospital to practice better medicine.
I look forward to meeting you and helping your pets. My dogs, Nina(Chihuahua), Nugget (Golden Retriever), Hershey (Lab), and Bobble (Silky Terrier), as well as my Blue-fronted Amazon parrot, Echo, are at the hospital most days. When not at the hospital, I enjoy foxhunting, yoga, scrapbooking, and spending time with my husband, cats, and horses.
