We’ve seen some really bad cases of tick bites recently. We pulled over 200 ticks off of one poor puppy just last week. The ticks seem to be out in droves right now. Check your pet after they have been outdoors, especially in the woods.

Your best option for dealing with ticks is a good prevention plan. Tick and flea prevention couldn’t be simpler. Stop by the hospital and pick up a topical dose of Advantix or Frontline for your dog or cat and apply it at home. The medication begins to work almost immediately and will protect your pet for an entire month. If your furry friend is along for the ride, we’d be happy to apply the medication for you…. just ask one of our friendly receptionists!!

Tollie was found severely injured, scared, and hungry, in a ditch, in late April of 2009. Dylan Ferguson is the young man who found Tollie, and decided he wanted his mom, Crystal (our very own) to take her to work with her to see if she could help out.

Tollie had severe trauma to her left, hind leg. She couldn’t put any weight on it, barely let it touch the ground, and effectively had lost all use of the appendage. After x-rays were taken, it was discovered she had multiple fractures to her leg. There was a lot of discussion about the best options for treatment. She had so many fractures to her leg, surgery was going to be very difficult, uncertain, and painful for Tollie. Since we knew nothing about where Tollie was from, or how long she had been injured, it was decided that amputation was the best option for her to recover in a quick and comfortable manner.

Dr. Johnstone volunteered his time to perform the surgery and Crystal took on the responsibility of monitoring and supporting Tollie during her recovery.

The pictures below are of Tollie just 90 minutes after her amputation surgery!! Can you believe that?? She is up and walking around only an hour and a half after surgery!! What a tough dog!

Tollie’s recovery went very smoothly. She acted like nothing happened, and is still the sweetheart she has always been. Tollie was adopted through the Martinsville/Henry County SPCA, but unfortunately was returned by that owner for unknown reasons.

We at HCAH have gladly taken Tollie back with open arms. She enjoys playing with other family members here at the hospital and is always in a very happy go lucky mood. Her friends include, Nugget (golden retriever), Hershey (chocolate lab), Marley (lab/beagle mix), Bobble (silky terrier) and Grendel (Shar Pei mix).

Everyone at the hospital loves Tollie, and enjoys seeing her here every day. She is currently available for adoption to a home that will love and care for her in a manner she definitely deserves. If you are interested in adopting Tollie, please give us a call at the hospital to arrange a time to meet her.

Here are a couple of pictures of Tollie today -
